Did the Civil War help or hinder women’s struggle for equality in a male-dominated, profoundly changed country? Women were certain they would gain the right to vote after their support of the Union war efforts, but they were betrayed. Lydia Thomas has her heart set on leaving the family farm in Michigan to work with the leading suffragists in Boston. She believes her new husband shares her plans. Some of the people she loves will stand in her way, but she finds steadfast support from others as she faces tragedy, treachery, and a mystery. Sensually written, the story follows colorful characters as they move adventurously through events of the time.
